When is big too big?

Last night I ventured out to the movie theatre to see the new movie 300. It was playing at an IMAX theatre which is a gigantic movie screen. Their slogan is SEE MORE, HEAR MORE, FEEL MORE. I definitely saw more, maybe a little too much.

We bought our tickets ahead of time to avoid any line-ups; however, when we arrived we had to wait to get into the actual theatre. We had to settle for seats that were about 10 rows up, maybe less. The movie started with a cheesy opening trying to get you pumped up for the IMAX experience, they didn't need to do this as my ticket was already purchased. As the actual movie began, I was amazed at how big it was, but found myself having to turn my entire head to see different parts of the screen. Does this mean I was too close or, the screen was just too big? There were a couple scenes in the movie where things were happening so fast that I could not tell what was going on.

Now, this is my beef. There is so much talk about sitting too close to a TV that could be a tiny square on the IMAX screen. Why do they allow people to sit so close and actually promote the experience? In my mind, they should change the layout in the IMAX theatres so that everyone can "Enjoy the Ultimate movie Experience", as they put it. Move the seats back!! I felt like I missed parts of the movie because I could not move my head to the other side of the screen quick enough!
By the way, the movie was pretty good. There was comic relief (as I saw it), sexuality, blood, fighting, adrenaline rushes, heads and arms being chopped off .... what more could you ask for in a movie?!

I would have hated that movie experience! I already think that regular cinemas are too loud.

I also agree that they should get rid of the seats right in front of the screen. I have never met one person that actually wants to sit there.

To me, watching a movie at home in your pj's is that best place to watch a movie. You cacn eat all the food you want, pause the movie to go to the bathroom, and you don't have annoying people talking around you. (I tend to be that person...hehe)

Hey Dave,
Well I have to say that Cam has seen this movie 3 times and he LOVES it.
He dragged me out to see it on his third time out. Although I was impressed with the physical appearance of the actors (how many hours in the gym for that kind of body?). I found that the director was unsure where to take this movie (i.e. direction). It could have been so much more but I felt that he was fighting with the original story line and his creative touches. To me I’d rate this movie 2 ½ stars.
